Global Utilities and Beyond

For over 30 years, UMS Group has delivered services to the energy and utilities industry. Among our customers are power generation companies, transmission and distribution gas and electricity suppliers, water/waste-water companies, public transport companies including rail and airports, and service providers surrounding the utility space. With our global footprint, we are proud to serve more than 400 clients on 6 continents.

Generation

Of course, the Energy Transition is bringing sea change to the industry, providing myriad generation challenges and opportunities. We support conventional as well as renewable generation owners with a wide range of services, combining technical and commercial insights from our benchmark database of 200 units and our staff who have worked in technical and commercial functions in generation. Recent projects include fossil exit optimization, benchmarking (individual company and global programs), aligning KPI structure to asset mission, due diligence on distressed assets, PPA evaluation and development, district heating/steam supply valuation and risk management.

Renewables

Decarbonization, DERs, and a shift to large-scale wind and solar generation are just a few changes that the industry faces in this Energy Transition era. We support organizations in the inevitable transformation to the Utility of the Future: re-thinking and executing integrated strategies while considering reliability and practical implementation approaches. Our deep industry experience, acknowledged thought leadership, and extensive network of industry leaders make us an ideal partner to help successfully navigate your journey to the future. Recent work in this area includes integration strategy and implementation of a new offshore wind business unit, Utility of the Future readiness assessments and strategy development, wind SAMP and organizational design, and support in SDE subsidy bidding strategy for biomass installations and solar field developers.

Electric Transmission & Distribution

Electric Transmission and Distribution companies face many challenges, including integration of renewables, new/enhanced power and information flows, aging assets and performing efficient monitoring and inspections, security and resiliency, and planning for evolving load requirements (EVs, DERs, etc.). We support many aspects of strategic and operational improvement. Some of our recent work includes asset management gap assessments and transformations, asset lifecycle strategies, drone data analysis, transmission line-span data enrichment, investment portfolio optimization, risk modeling, regulatory and rate case support, and leading multiple transmission- and distribution-focused best practice learning consortia.

Water

Issues around aging infrastructure, leaks, conservation and efficiency, long-term supply, resiliency, and emergency preparedness are often high on the current agendas of Water utilities. We believe world-class Asset Management combined with data analytics provides effective solutions and support for efficient operations and a safe, resilient water supply. UMS Group supports Water and Wastewater utilities with a wide range of services. Recent projects include Mechanical Electrical Asset Performance Benchmarking study for the water sector in Australia, Asset Management and ISO 55000 assessments, audits and implementation support, risk and portfolio management, due diligence support, and our International Water Utility Consortium (iWUC).

Gas Distribution, Transmission & Storage

Gas utilities are facing numerous challenges and increased regulatory scrutiny around aging infrastructure, workforce attrition, increasing environmental challenges, pipeline safety, volatile prices, quality and interchangeability issues, and implementing new technologies. UMS Group has experience across gas storage and midstream and downstream services. Example types of work we have done include Asset Management, investment planning and portfolio management, risk framework assessment and design, customer service improvements, markouts productivity tool implementation, work management, and productivity improvement, appliance repair process efficiency, and leak detection and response processes.

Transport

In addition to restoring customer demand and financial health after the massive impacts of the pandemic, the transportation industry (i.e. rail, airports, metro) must also work to address challenges such as ensuring safety and health, increased data and digitalization, optimizing lifecycle costs and investments, and reducing carbon footprint. We offer rail and metro infrastructure managers, train operators (heavy and light rail), and airports a wide range of services. Recent projects include greening energy contracts, risk-based optimization of asset investments, Asset Management and ISO 55000 training, maturity assessments, audits and implementation support.

Utility Service Providers

UMS Group also works with industry service providers for the utility space, such as construction firms, equipment manufacturers, and drone companies. We are often in a unique position to provide leading industry insights, data, and contacts to liaise between our utility client network and these cutting-edge technology providers. Some of our recent work in this space has included (1) developing best practice preventative transmission line maintenance plans and asset strategies/approaches for emergency maintenance for a large infrastructure construction company and (2) conducting a custom study to collect input from utility experts for a manufacturer designing a new vacuum breaker technology.

Oil and Gas

Across up and downstream, the oil and gas industry is now presented with tremendous opportunities to support, steer, and sustain the energy transition. From remonetizing old well sites as micro-solar or wind farms to leading the way on early hydrogen developments, oil and gas companies have a critical role to play in the future energy mix. UMS Group helps these companies identify leading transition strategies to enrich and strengthen their portfolios and assists in helping to understand how to best manage each of the new asset classes associated with emerging energy technologies. Recent successes include standing up a new asset management operation for a North American renewables division for a global oil company and completing an end-to-end redefinition of their maintenance strategies and processes.

Mining

Consuming over 1/3 of the average mine’s cost, energy generation and its attending costs and consequences have become a key focal point for miners and their shareholders. Capturing the opportunity to implement cleaner, less expensive, and more sustainable sources of energy at the mine site is going to require a brand new set of skills, experience, strategies. UMS Group leverages its over 30 years of experience in implementing asset management, operational process and models, technologies, and more to help CEOs, COOs, and mine asset management identify the right energy mix and how to productively and safely harness it to realize and reinforce the gains to the triple bottom line.
