International Transmission Asset Management Study (ITAMS)

The transmission business is confronted with a number of global issues, like aging equipment and workforce, and increased regulatory pressure for improving reliability/availability without a proportionate increase in OPEX. All these issues are each presenting unique challenges and opportunities. How do utilities cope with these issues throughout the world? What are their practices and how are they organized to meet the company’s objectives? These and other related issues are addressed in the ITAMS program.

ITAMS, a spin-off of ITOMS, is a study of Asset Management as a management discipline, and places measures on the key areas needed to perform Value Based Asset Management. ITAMS is aligned to ISO 55001 and allows the participating companies to compare their position against similar organizations in both Asset Management practices and Asset Management results (value realization). ITAMS is set up as a learning consortium and performed every two years. A cycle ends with a results/best practices conference designed for sharing knowledge and addressing opportunities and improvement initiatives.

Benefits of participating in ITAMS:

  • Obtain comparative diagnostics and benchmarks that can be used for target setting, gap analysis, process optimization, organization development, and in productive dialogue with governing boards and regulators.
  • Gather evidence to prove where you are the best in class.
  • Get new ideas by sharing best practices with your peers.
  • Gain insight how value-based asset management is implemented in comparable regions.
  • Compare performance on the strategic objective level: i.e. safety, quality of service, legal, environment and finance.

The scope of ITAMS:

The ITAMS program focuses on the tactical level of Asset Management and is zooming in on four key-areas: Operating Model, Process, Competences, and Information Management & Enabling Technology.

How to participate in ITAMS:

UMS is scheduling a new cycle for ITAMS, as a follow-up on the very successful past four cycles (2010 - 2016). Data collection will start in Q2 - 2018, and the Final Reports be delivered in Q4 – 2018. For more information, please download the Program Overview ITAMS 2018. The results of the latest cycle, ITAMS 2016, are outlined in the E-book Asset Management Lessons from Peers.
