EDF and UMS
Team to Optimize Capital Programme
Parsippany, New Jersey – UMS Group, Inc. (UMS) today announced the completion of an implementation of its proprietary Spend Optimization Process for the Networks Branch of EDF
Energy - EDF’s UK subsidiary. The UMS process was implemented for the 2006 budget year across EDF Energy’s electricity distribution business which serves some 8 million homes and business
in London and the South East of Great Britain. As a result, EDF Energy gained significant improvements in investment effectiveness and accountability.
The UMS Spend Optimization Process facilitates the value assessment of all spending plans in
terms of the company’s unique strategic business objectives. Through comparative analyses of discretionary project and program spending scenarios, Client planning and budgeting decisions
are supported in the domains of value effectiveness and risk. In addition, the process supports
Client decision-making in the mandatory spending domain – assessing alternatives that release portions
of the planned spending to be applied to areas of greater value (i.e., increased reliability, customer satisfaction, enhanced safety, reduced environmental impact, improved financial returns, etc.).
In describing the accomplishment, David Openshaw, Manager Asset Management, EDF Energy Networks Branch, stated, “We are very pleased with the rapid implementation of the UMS
optimization process and tool set at EDF Energy. Our business is under increasing pressure to do more with
less. In support of our strategies, we are charged to allocate capital and other resources
to those assets and investments that in combination act to meet the organizations’ strategic
objectives most effectively. We considered that the overall UMS package was superior to others in
“We saw in the UMS process and toolset an effective method of implementing an objective and transparent investment decision process for allocation of capital, both in the year-ahead timeframe and over the longer term planning horizon.”
“The successful implementation of the process was down to effective team working between UMS’ project team and EDF Energy’s Asset Management team. This combination resulted in the project being one of the best managed and implemented we have experienced here at EDF Energy.”
The UMS Spend Optimization Process is designed for application to asset-intensive businesses faced with constrained capital availability.
